7 Educational Apps to Entertain Kids During COVID-19

Now that COVID-19 restrictions have kids home from school and daycare, it can be hard to keep them engaged all day long. Most parents don’t have the time to give their kids one-on-one attention all the time, so what can you do when you have other work you need to focus on? Educational apps for kids can be a convenient tool to keep your kids occupied while you’re busy. And since these apps are designed to be both entertaining and educational, parents can feel good about allowing a little extra screen time. These seven educational apps are some of our favorites.

Duolingo

Duolingo is one of the most popular language education apps on the market. It turns learning a language into a game, complete with points and leaderboards. The basic app is free to use, and children can select from over 30 different languages. Because there is a lot of reading and writing, this may be better suited to older children and teenagers. By the time schools reconvene, your child could have a fairly sizable vocabulary in their new language!

ABCmouse.com

Designed for ages two through eight, ABCmouse.com is a popular subscription service full of educational materials. It teaches reading, math, science, and more. Members also have access to the ABCmouse.com app, which has thousands of educational activities, including lessons, games, and books. Want to give it a try? You can enjoy a 30-day free trial and cancel anytime if it isn’t right for your child.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is a non-profit that provides an awesome learning app free of charge. The app includes videos, quizzes, exercises, and articles on a wide range of topics, including history, government, economics, science, math, and so much more. It has content for young learners straight through to high school students. Even parents could probably learn a thing or two!

Epic!

If your kids are voracious readers, you probably can’t keep enough books in the house to see them through the lockdown. Sure, you could spend a small fortune downloading eBooks, but there is a more affordable solution! The Epic! app has a digital library of thousands of books for children 12 and under. There are also quizzes and learning videos to keep your kids entertained. Plus, this subscription service lets you join for 30 days for free!

Prodigy

Prodigy is a math program for children from first grade through eighth grade. The game app is full of quests, pets, and prizes. Kids can also play with their friends to work a little social time into their daily schedule. The basic version is free and gives kids plenty of access to fun learning materials. A premium membership is also available, which unlocks more rewards and features.

Piano App by Yokee

If your little musician is stuck at home without instruments, the Piano App by Yokee is a fun alternative. Kids can learn more about chords and rhythm by playing some of their favorite songs. While you need a subscription to access the full song list, some songs are available for free. Plus, kids can earn coins by playing, which they can use to unlock more songs.

codeSpark Academy

CodeSpark Academy is designed to teach children ages five through nine programming skills through games, puzzles, and projects. This is a subscription service, but customers can try it free for seven days and cancel if they don’t like it. CodeSpark Academy is also temporarily offering a 50% discount with the code STARTCODING.
