Understanding Coupon Limits (One Per Item!)

Questions about how many coupons you can use are some of the most frequently asked questions here on Couponing 101, so I decided it was time to address the topic!

Can I use more than one coupon per item?

You can only use ONE manufacturer coupon per item. All manufacturer coupons will say “manufacturer coupon” somewhere along the top of the coupon. A store coupon is different and I will talk more about that type of coupon below.

If I have a coupon for $0.50 off one Kraft cheese and a coupon for $1 off two Kraft cheeses, can I buy two Kraft cheeses and use both coupons?

No. Even though the values of the coupons are different, you would still be using two coupons on one item, which is not allowed.

If I have a $0.50 off one Kraft cheese coupon from the Sunday newspaper and a $0.50 off one Kraft cheese coupon that I printed from the internet, can I use both on one Kraft cheese?

No. Even if the coupons come from different sources, you cannot use two coupons on the same item.

If I have a $0.50 off one Kraft cheese coupon and a Buy One Get One Free (B1G1) Kraft cheese coupon, can I buy two cheeses and use both coupons?

No. The B1G1 coupon applies to both items (basically the same as a $1 off two applies to both items), so using an additional $0.50 coupon would not be allowed. You can read more about this coupon stacking debate here.

If I have a $0.50 off one Kraft cheese coupon and a $0.50 off one Kraft cheese STORE coupon, can I buy one Kraft cheese and use both coupons?

Yes! You can use one manufacturer coupon and one store coupon per item. This is allowed because with the manufacturer’s coupon the manufacturer is providing the discount, but with a store coupon the store is providing the discount.

If I have a $0.50 off one Kraft cheese coupon and a $0.50 off one Kraft cheese eCoupon that I’ve loaded onto my store’s shopping card, can I use both?

No. Most stores will not allow you to use an eCoupon and a paper coupon on the same item because they consider eCoupons to be manufacturer coupons.

If Kraft cheese is on sale Buy One Get One Free and I have two $0.50 off one Kraft cheese coupons, can I use both coupons?

Yes! Most stores will allow you to use a coupon on the “free” item because you are still “purchasing” the item, even though the selling price is $0.

If Kraft cheese is on sale Buy One Get One Free and I have a Buy One Get One Free coupon, how would this work?

You would buy two Kraft cheeses. The first one would be free with the sale, the second would be free with the coupon, making both free (not all stores will allow this).

I hope this helps to clear things up. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

  • Garnier fructis is on sale buy 2 get 1 free. I have 2 manufacturers coupons of buy 2 get $3 off. Can I buy 4 garnier fructis and use both coupons even thought 1 bottle is free?

  • Hi! So for Dollar General I have a coupon for Beneful dog food $3 off then during three day sale another coupon came out buy one get one free. Can I use both coupons? I’ve tried it on the app but it’s not working that way, but I’ve had deals not work on app but will in person so I’m confused if I should chance it or not.

  • I have a store coupon that is $2 off any two dove wash

And a manufacturer's coupon that is $1 off any one dove wash

    Can I combine them?

    • Hi Jessi! Typically, YES, most stores allow you to combine a manufacturer coupon with a store coupon, as long as you meet the requirements for both. In this case, you have to buy at least two washes to use the store coupon. Of course, every store is different and can sometimes decline stacking coupons, but it never hurts to try!

  • I had a coupon for $0.50 off a product and there was a $0.50 off coupon ON the product. When I checked out the store only gave me $0.75 off. They've never done that, it's always been the 2 combined in full. Can a store only honor part of a coupon?

    • Hi Tammy, Sometimes the fine print will state that it cannot be used in conjunction with other offers, in which case they can only take one. It's interesting that they would give you $0.75 off instead of just $0.50 though!

  • Hello, so I’m new to couponing. I have a question about the printable coupons. I had a 4 same coupons I guess with the same number? But it stated can use 4 identical coupons. But than I see other coupons that state 4 like coupons per person. What’s the difference?

  • If I have 3 coupons of PAMPERS DIAPERS with $3.00 off OF EACH . CAN I BUY MORE THAN 3 ?

  • If I have a coupon worth 2.00 off of a detergent but the detergent is on sale for 1.99 can I still get that detergent?

    • If I have a coupon that requires that I buy two items to qualify for the price deduction of the coupon . Am I able to use two of these coupons?
So I have a $1.50 off TWO Summers Eve products. Am I able to use two of these coupons in the transaction since I do have two coupons and two products?

      • Hi Natalie! You will need two products in order to redeem one coupon, since two products are required for the $1.50 off. If you have two coupons and want to use it on a total of four products, you'll just have to make sure that there's no language in the coupon's fine print about "limit one per transaction" or something similar. Hope that helps!

  • My question is : is a manufactured coupon says “do not double “ or “cannot be redeemed with any other coupon” mean I can not use a store coupon and the manufacturer coupon?

  • If I have a coupon that says $.50 off chicken broth for example and I have two of those.. can I get two of those chicken broths and use both coupons?

  • Hello, im totally new to the whole couponing bizz. I am a bit skeptical about trying bc it seems i keep getting told different things about how to coupon. I was told that if you go to food lion then you can use 4 different coupons that all say "$1.00 off".But that never made sense considering that if the item of purchase was 5 dollars retail price and i used $4 dollars worth of coupons then i would end up paying $1 all together. Im just confused as ever. I was told you can use more than 3 store coupons plus 1 manufacturer coupon but now im hearing otherwise. Please HELP!!!
