7 Affordable Mommy and Me Activities for Kids Under 5

Mommy and me time is everything (and more) to little kids. They love when it’s one on one with mommy and they get your full attention. Having a child that is under the age of 5 keeps you constantly on your toes. Here are some super fun and affordable ideas for you to do with your little one that will build many memories:

  1. Join a local playgroup. Many cities have playgroups available through companies aimed towards kids or with other mom groups. Many of these are free or cheap and it’s a great way to make other mommy friends and have your kiddos socialize at the same time. Try searching your local area on Facebook!
  2. Picnic in the park. Have you and your child build a lunch together, pack the lunch together, then take a trip to your local park and have a picnic.
  3. Go out for coffee. I know that when my children were 3 and 4 years old, doing anything “adult-like” was the coolest thing ever. Take your little one out to coffee (get them a hot chocolate or chocolate milk) sit down and chat about your day.
  4. Get artsy. Get some smocks or old clothes on and get messy! Stick your hands and feet in paint and make masterpieces that you can keep forever.
  5. Visit the library. Head to your local library and let your little one pick out a book to read together. Grab a couple extras for bedtime stories.
  6. Snap some photos. Give your little one your phone (or not-so-expensive camera) and tell them they’re a photographer for a day. Head outdoors and have them take a snapshot of what they like and find interesting. When you get home, let them tell you why they chose to take a photo of that. You can even make a scrapbook with all the photos and explanations from your child.
  7. Pretend you’re on a cooking show. My daughter and I still do this regularly, and she’s 7. I get her help in the kitchen and we act like we are being recorded. We pretend we are Martha Stewart and Julia Child.

Most importantly, whatever activity you decide, all children really want is your time, and for them, that’s everything.
