8 Social Distancing Activities for Couples on Lockdown

Hunkering down with your honey may seem ever-so romantic. You might picture yourself cuddling every night and having deep conversations you never had time for previously. But as the days turn to weeks, your time locked down together may quickly turn to tedium, and instead of talking about your hopes and dreams, you may end up arguing over how many squares of toilet paper are appropriate to use in one sitting.

You chose your partner for a reason. While self isolating is stressful, it doesn’t have to halt all the wonderful, fun moments you share. You might not be able to enjoy a night out like you used to, but these eight fun activities can be a welcome distraction.

Cook Together

Not only is making a meal together productive, it can also be a good way to bond over a shared goal. Depending on what you have in the house, you might need to get a little more creative with your menu, but sometimes a challenge is fun. Don’t believe us? Try binge-watching “Cutthroat Kitchen” on Hulu before you make your meal.

Have a Romantic Meal

Do you have something special tucked away in your freezer? Is your favorite restaurant still delivering? A good meal at home can be just as romantic as a night out. If you want to make it feel extra special, you might trade out your pajamas for your fancy clothes. And for a fun throwback, ask your date to pick you up… even if that just means escorting you from the bedroom to the kitchen.

Spend Time Outside

The great outdoors are still open for business. Just follow local regulations and make sure you stay a safe distance from other people. You could spend time in your own yard, enjoying yard games, having a picnic, or just sitting around. If you have a dog, you could also take it for a walk around your neighborhood and both enjoy some exercise.

Learn Together

Learning is fun, and learning together is even more fun. You have a built-in study partner and someone to bounce your ideas off of. There are lots of free ways to learn. For instance, you can study a new language (and compete with each other) using Duolingo. Class Central also has a hefty list of free Ivy League classes to give your brain a workout.

Have a Movie Night

You may have already done a Netflix binge or two, but a designated movie night can still feel special. Select a movie you want to watch and plan when you’ll watch it together. If you have some popcorn in your pantry, even better!

Battle It Out with a Game Tournament

A game tournament can be a fun way to compete against each other… all in good fun, of course. Card games, board games, and video games can all make for fun activities. Want to try something new? Find a card game you haven’t played before and look up the rules online.

Read the Same Book

If you’re sharing the same home without the option of having a break from each other, your alone time may be more important than ever. Reading the same book can give you each an opportunity to be alone with your thoughts for a while. And when you’re ready to come back together, you’ll have something new to talk about. Don’t have two copies of the same book? Don’t worry! There are lots of ways to get free e-books, such as your local library’s digital collection, Amazon Prime’s free Kindle books, and Project Gutenberg.

Plan Your Next Trip

Planning a trip can be so fun but so time-consuming. If you start planning now, you might have a clearer idea of where you want to go and what you want to do after things get better. Plus, thinking about your next vacation together can give you both something to look forward to.
