6 Ways to Throw a Social Distancing Graduation Party

Graduation is one of the biggest events in a student’s life. While graduation may look a little different this year due to COVID-19 stay at home orders, it’s still a reason to celebrate! With social distancing in place, you may need to get creative to plan a remote party. But that doesn’t mean you can’t throw a memorable party that everyone will enjoy! Here are six creative ways to have a social distancing graduation party.

Turn Smaller Milestones into Celebrations

Putting together a big party could be challenging, but satisfying smaller milestones could be just as satisfying. You can celebrate completing the final assignment, finishing the final day of school, or even driving by your old school one last time. To make these smaller events seem like a big deal, you might have a special meal or honor the graduate by letting them select what to binge-watch next.

Gather with Friends and Family via Video Conference

Zoom, Skype, and Google Hangouts have surged in popularity as people look for a way to connect remotely. These same tools that have become the darlings of the business world can also help you host a remote graduation party. You could do a party with friends, a party with family, or do a combined party with friends and family. However, since too many people in a video chat can get overwhelming, you might prefer to break it down into smaller groups.

Coming up with topics ahead of time can help keep the conversation flowing. You might reminisce about all that’s happened over the years or discuss your plans for the future.

Play Games Remotely

Playing games is an irresistibly fun way to celebrate a graduation, and you don’t have to be in the same room with your friends and family to do so! Charades and Two Truths and a Lie work just fine over video chat. Improv games could also be fun, and you can find some great ideas at Improv Encyclopedia. You may need to adjust some of them to work remotely, but a graduate should have the necessary problem-solving skills to make it work!

If you want to take some of the work out of planning a game-based graduation party, there are also social game apps that can help. Jackbox Games and Houseparty combine games and video chat to take your remote party to the next level.

Host a Remote Movie Night

Watching your favorite movie or TV show with your party guests can be a fun and relaxing way to celebrate. While you could just use your favorite streaming service and try to start watching in unison, there are also several services that help you sync up your viewing and chat as you watch. You and your guests might use Netflix Party, Metastream, or twoseven to make the process easier.

Don’t Skimp on Snacks

Good food can make a difference in any party, and the same is true of remote parties! You might consider shipping or dropping off food for your guests (while keeping your distance, of course). Otherwise, you could encourage your guests to enjoy their favorite foods during the celebration.

Consider Planning it for Later Date

If you simply must get together with friends or family to celebrate a graduation, consider planning it for a later date. Having a graduation party once things have improved could make seeing them again so much more special.
