Stockpile FAIL…That Turns Into a Win!

Do you have a few boxes of cheap or free cereal sitting in the back of your pantry because your kids hate it?  Me too.

I bought quite a few boxes of Kashi Honey Sunshine cereal a few months ago when it was really cheap.  Unfortunately, my kids just did not care for it, and my husband and I don’t really eat much cereal.  So, it has been sitting on my shelves forever.

The other day I got fed up with looking at those boxes, so I grabbed a box of the Kashi and the open box of Multi-Grain Cheerios (which my kids LOVE), and poured equal amounts of each into their bowls.

My kids were thrilled!  Having two different kinds of cereal was just so exciting to them!  They paid no attention to the fact that their cereal nemesis was floating right alongside their beloved Cheerios.  Now that I am mixing their favorite cereals with their not-so-favorite cereals, we may actually use up all the cereal before it expires!

I know mixing up cereal is probably not an entirely new concept, but sometimes we overlook the simple solutions!

Have you ever stockpiled an item only to have your family hate it?

  • My kids didn't like the Honey Sunshine cereal either. But I only bought 1 box to start. Great idea!

  • Great post. I love hearing news ways to get kids to eat healthy cereals. Just visiting from Mrs. Moneysavers. Stop by and check out my giveaway; all you to do is leave a comment.

  • Not too long ago I had stockpiled a ton of cans of Hormel chili, knowing my husband loves chili on all different kinds of things. Come to find out, he's pretty picky about that chili -- he will only eat Wolf brand chili! I'm still trying to think of creative ways to use it in which his taste buds won't be offended :)

  • This happens to me as well, I have found a great solution. Turns out I can give any (low sugar) cereal that is not corn based to the rabbit and he loves it. Has extended the life of his pellets and I feel less guilty having so many boxes of cereal in the house. Even my daughter who loves the couponing, told me "No more cereal..." I just can't resist the free stuff LOL!

  • Haha! My mom used to do this to "healthify" sugar cereal. She's buy a bag of froot loops and a bag or plain cheerios and mix them together. She also did this with chocolate milk....mixed it with white milk to create 2 gallons of chocolately milk versus just one. We used to tease her about it...but now I realize it was pure GENIUS!

  • I have found that when i get a cereal that doesn't 'move' and getting close to expiring... I get a bag of marshmellows and some butter and make them into marshmellow treats (just like Rice Krispie treats, but with a different cereal!!!)

My kids will eat ANYTHING with marshmellow on it!!! LOL

  • Great idea!! But how could anyone not love Kashi Honey Sunshine??? Feel free to pass any extra boxes over my way... I'll trade you for Kashi Go Lean. :)

  • I wish I lived near you ladies. I like that Honey Sunshine cereal and I would buy it from you! Mixing cereals is something I have been doing since I was a kid. It's a good way to get some healthy whole grain and fiber when you mix it with a sweet cereal or even a non-sweet cereal you love.

  • I do this all the time too to get my kids to eat the healthy cereal!! Oh, the sneaky things moms do!!

  • Those are the 2 boxes sitting in our pantry also. My kids hated the Honey Sunshine. I finally donated all those boxes to the food pantry.
