8 Social Distancing Activities for Families on Lockdown

The stress of the COVID-19 crisis may make you crave fun and stress relief more than usual. But with social distancing in place, your old ways of having fun may not cut it anymore. When your family needs a break, you don’t need to lament the fact that you have nowhere to go. There’s still plenty of fun to be had without leaving your house!

Have a Movie Night

We’re deep enough into the lockdown that we’re sure you’ve probably seen a movie or two. But have you made a night of it? Set aside a night just for movies, put on your pajamas, pile onto the couch, and have some snacks! Here are some tips for hosting an awesome classic movie marathon.

Play Board Games

Get out the family friendly board games! The right game can give the whole family hours of fun. And if you get bored with the games you have, you can try changing the rules or making up your own games.

Build a Fort

Do you remember how fun it was to build a magical pillow fort when you were a kid? Well, it can be just as fun as an adult. Plus, your whole family can get in on the construction and then pile into the fort to relax, read, or chat.

Camp Inside or In Your Yard

If your family loves camping, you don’t have to give it up just because you’re stuck at home. Make room on the living room floor and bring in your sleeping bags for a family camping trip inside your own house. You could make s’mores, tell ghost stories, or sing campfire songs.

Feeling more adventurous? If you have a large enough yard to maintain a responsible distance from your neighbors, you could set up a tent outside and spend the night under the stars.

Play Improv Games

Improv games can be a laugh riot! Not only are they fun, but they’re also a great way to practice going with the flow and thinking on your feet. Improv 4 Kids lists some child-friendly activities that the whole family can participate in. You might also consider filming your improv games. Many children love watching videos of themselves. If nothing else, they might be fun to look back on in years to come.

Plant Something

Have some room in your yard? Enlist your children to help you turn it into a garden. While shipments may take some time, seeds are still available online. If you don’t have a big enough yard, you could also plant something indoors. You could grow herbs, succulents, flowers, or other plants, but if supplies are limited, sprouting dried beans or grains can also be fun and intriguing.

Have a Picnic

Once the weather warms up, having a picnic can make it feel like it’s finally summer. If you have a large enough yard, just lay out a blanket and enjoy your meal outside. If your yard is a little too close to your neighbors or you live in an apartment, indoor picnics can be just as fun!

Have a Karaoke Night

Some kids love to perform. And so do some of their parents! Karaoke night can give everyone a chance to perform for each other. And if you don’t have a karaoke machine at home, don’t worry…there are lots of karaoke channels on YouTube.
