Eggs In A Nest Recipe

Easy and fun breakfast idea - eggs in a nest! Use cookie cutters to make fun shapes for the kids!

“Eggs in a Nest” is currently my favorite breakfast food. The thought of it will get me out of bed in the morning. I’m not much of a breakfast person, so that’s saying something!

Plus, my kids love it and I can make fun shapes in the bread for them using cookie cutters. They get a kick out of it!

“Eggs in a Nest” goes by several other names like “Eggs in a Basket” and “Frog in a Pond”, so you may have heard of it by another name.

It’s so simple to make, so this really isn’t much of a recipe, but I’ve been dying to share my favorite breakfast with you all!

I like to serve with a side of sausage and fruit!

  1. My kids call them ” Eggs in a Frame”. They got the recipe from a kids cookbook and it is their FAVORITE breakfast food! I love the idea of scrambling the egg first so it can be eaten on the go. I am going to try it tomorrow!

  2. My grandmother made egg in the nest for me all the time. She would always cut it up for me too – even as I got older. Great memories!

  3. Loooove these! We always called them a “toe in the hole” but maybe we just got it mixed up w/ “toad” somewhere along the line. I also met someone who called it a “Kramer.” I thought that was odd, but to each their own!

  5. Ha! My husband saw these made in the movie Ultraviolet and had to try them. Huge hit! Kids love to cut up the bread in fun shapes! Never had them as a kid, I’m so jealous…must make up for that now! 🙂

    • I never had them as a kid either, so I’m also making up for lost time, lol. At first we just did circle cutouts but now it’s fun to use cookie cutters to make fun shapes.

  6. We called these “Egyptian Eye” when I was growing up. I think that was the name listed in the kids cookbook we had. I’ve always wondered what Toad in the Hole was – guess I’ve been eating it all along and never knew! lol
Thanks for sharing, I’d almost forgotten how good those were!

  7. We called these Toad In The Hole and I made it for my son when he was in high school. I whisked the egg and poured it in the hole. That way he could wrap it in a napkin and eat it as he drove to school! He has a daughter now and can’t wait until she is big enough so I can make these for her.

  8. That is something I learned how to make when I was a child learning to cook over 30 years ago. I make it for my kids and they enjoy it.

  9. My Mom made this for me as a kid. She called it Egg in the Middle. Agree the cutout is so good. We used it for dipping in the yolk.

  10. We always ate these growing up! I loved them! Now I make them for my two girls! My favorite part was always to save the cut out bread to eat last!

  12. random, but sort of associated…
we had eggs on smashed lentils for dinner the other night. it was a big hit. the recipe said to bake the eggs in the lentils (in ramekins)…. but i had a hard time monitoring the yolks that way… by the time the white had set, the yolk was firm. so i found it easier to cook the eggs in a little non-stick pan & set em atop a mound of moroccan spiced smashed lentils.

this is the recipe, but i used moroccan spices & cooked the eggs separately after the first failed attempt 😉
