5 Free Things To Do in New York City This Winter

As the holiday season approaches, you might be planning a fun and festive trip to New York. While New York can be magical in winter, it can also be incredibly expensive. Between Christmas shopping, restaurant meals, tourist site visits, and Broadway shows, even a quick weekend trip can get very costly. However, there are plenty of free activities to enjoy in New York City this winter without spending money. Here are five of our favorites!

See the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights

If you can’t resist a brilliant display of Christmas lights, head on over to Dyker Heights in Brooklyn. The Dyker Heights neighborhood is well-known for its elaborate Christmas light displays. Visiting the neighborhood near the holidays can be a memorable (and spectacular) free activity.

Visit a Christmas Market

Christmas markets start springing up in New York City in late October. While shopping at the markets could add up, you can stroll through many of the markets for free and soak up the holiday spirit. You might consider visiting the Union Square Holiday Market, the Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park, the Grand Central Terminal Holiday Fair, and other markets around the city.

Figure Skate at Bryant Park

If you pack your own skates, you can skate for free in Bryant Park. Not only does it offer a festive atmosphere, but it is also New York City’s only free admission skating rink.

Visit the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is an iconic Christmas tree that is estimated to attract millions of visitors each year. Best of all, you can see the tree for free. If you plan ahead, you may even be able to snag a free spot at the famous tree lighting ceremony.

Look at Store Windows

Many New York City department stores still do elaborate window displays for the holidays. Strolling past stores like Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy’s, and Bloomingdale’s can be both festive and free.
